Your wage will depend on the rates of the company that hires you and your level of training and experience, but regardless of where you start if you show ability, professionalism and commitment you will be able to progress. On average newly qualified builders take home around £22,000 a year and as you prove your worth, responsibilities and pay will increase over time – with opportunities to access training to develop your skills. With experience, you may also decide to become self-employed, set what you charge and decide who you work for. If you want to hone your skills you may go on to pursue an apprenticeship scheme. They’re widely available, open to any age and range from the equivalent to a GCSE right up to degree level. Some large construction firms even offer sponsored degree apprenticeships, which means your training fees could be covered and there’ll be no debt at the end of it!Next Step
